Jack Lee is a white lawyer in Virginia. When a Black man, Jerome, is arrested for killing a rich older couple, Jack decides to take the man’s case. It becomes apparent that the police and other locals are not interested in finding the truth. They are only interested in finding the Black man guilty and sentenced to death.

When Desiree Dubose, a Black Lawyer shows up to represent Jerome, Jack forms a shaky partnership to battle an establishment that will do anything to find the defendant guilty to further the political ends of a racist Southern candidate. But can two people who are so different put aside their differences to do what’s best for their client?

Reminiscent of To Kill a Mockingbird, Baldacci explores the civil unrest in 1968. With danger on all sides and an exciting courtroom drama, this story has an incredible twist that proves what a master Baldacci is.
