A Place Called Freedom by Ken Follet

The story begins in 1766 in a coal mining community. Mack McAsh, a commoner and coal miner, who dreams of being a freeman and escapes to London with the help of Lizzy Hallim, a noble lady, who refuses to accept her lot in life as a woman. Both fight for the dream of being truly free. The cry for freedom calls from the colonies and it is here they will make their mark or die trying.

As with all of Follet’s historical novels, you will and breath those ancient times. His books are a time capsule to a magnificent, but brutal past.
