At the exact moment that Jimmy Tock is born, his grandfather makes five predictions concerning his newly born grandson. They predict tragedy on five different dates. He then dies, as if making room for Jimmy to enter the world. Those five dates are the focus of this story and how fate may already be determined, for good or bad.

The story is action-packed, but the author shows his sense of humour through his characters. With snappy banter between the original characters, Koontz gives a humorous, yet thought-provoking story about life and what we can expect from it. Totally different from his other stories, it is still a refreshing change.
