Swan Song by Robert McCammon

I read this years ago and when I got the chance to listen to it on audio; I jumped at the change. Similar to The Stand by Stephen King, as in the end of the world scenario, McCammon proves he’s an equal to King. Rather than a plague that whips out most of the world, Swan Song describes the apocalypse as a world war. When nuclear missiles are launched, Mankind is kicked to the stone age.

The story follows several groups as they try to survive in a world where food is killed over, fresh water is next to impossible to find, and a nuclear winter has fallen across North America. As expected, groups gather for protection, but also for grabbing every resource they can. This leads to an ultimate confrontation to decide if the earth will survive and mend or die off for good.

As with The Stand, there is an evil supernatural presence which is encouraging the end of humanity and others who oppose them. It creates a magnificent story; the audio was 34+ hours long, but worth every minute.

And now there is word that the book is being made into a television series. So, stay tuned. I’m so pumped.
